In this paper, I am looking for connections that you can make between this week’s topic (implicit motives & acquired needs) and topics dealt with previously(Provided the material). In the mini-lecture, I gave an example of loosing your car keys and the intensity of motivation that it produces. It would seem that many of our most potent motivators have been acquired. In the videos this week, Daniel Pink and Ken Robinson address major problems with business organizations (and the fundamental motives in the economy) and the education system – two areas where people spend a lot of their time. In both of these areas, business and education, systems have developed based on faulty motivational assumptions that create a self-sustaining folklore describing how things should be done – that is the basis of implicit motives.
I would like to ask you to identify a comparable example of an implicit motive of your own (or somebody you know) where you observe the defining elements of motivation: behaviour with intensity and clear direction. That is, find an acquired need to analyze (a need comparable to needing to find your car keys).
In your analysis consider the role of
(1) emotions as causes and consequences of the behaviour,
(2) the interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards,
(3) the satisfaction of needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, and finally
(4) the potential for the behaviour to tell us something about free will.
I am looking for interesting, novel connections in your answers, links among the topics from, the resources provided, and how the 4 issues above (emotion, intrinsic/extrinsic rewards, needs reflecting self-determination, and free will) unfold as you observe bahaviour driven by an acquired need or implicit motive.
