Inconsistent, unstable, or unsafe living conditions can be detrimental to the mental health of children and adolescents. For example, consider the living conditions in a homeless shelter. A child or adolescent may sleep with their family in one large room with many other homeless families, which offers no privacy or peace and quiet. They may have to stand in line for hours to get meals, or they may skip meals all together. They may have to bathe in a communal bathroom or worry about their belongings being stolen. Now, consider the living conditions in a neighborhood with high levels of violence and crime. A child or adolescent might fear playing outside or walking to school. They may have immediate family or neighbors who were killed by gun violence. How do you think these living conditions might contribute to mental health crises, such as depression and substance abuse? And as an HSPP, how would you respond?

Case Study:
Timothy is a 16-year-old adolescent who is homeless. His family frequents the soup kitchen where you volunteer. After dinner service, Timothy shares that he has not been feeling like himself since his family has become homeless. He explains that he has periods when he feels really sad and cries uncontrollably. He says that he feels hopeless and wonders if his family will ever have a stable home again. Although he values his family, he is having trouble finding self-worth. Placing his hands over his face, he begins to cry audibly. You believe that Timothy may be experiencing depression, although he has not been formally diagnosed.
